Economics Personality: An Evolutionary Process

My Economics Personality I study and "do" economics all the time. But have you ever stepped back and thought about your economics personality? For me, it has been evolving throughout my life. When I was younger, I would have identified much more with economists like John Maynard Keynes or Paul Samuelson—focusing on centralized equilibrium models, state intervention, and macroeconomic levers. Today, my economic personality has evolved toward liberty, spontaneous order, and rea

Demystifying Backpropagation: The 300-Year-Old Calculus Rule Powering Modern AI

Modern artificial intelligence systems rely on an underlying algorithm to learn: Backpropagation. Whether predicting text, recognizing images, or translating languages, neural networks depend on this universal mechanism. The core mathematical mechanism behind backpropagation is not a recent invention. The algorithm relies on a calculus rule formulated by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in 1676: the chain rule. To understand how modern AI works, we examine how this centuries-old mat

Bridging the AI Divide: Moving Higher Education from Hesitation to Integration

"If men learn this, it will implant forgetfulness in their souls; they will cease to exercise memory because they will rely on that which is written, calling things to remembrance no longer from within themselves, but by means of external marks." — Socrates (in Plato's Phaedrus) Educators have long questioned how new tools alter human cognition. Socrates was not warning against algorithms, but the newest technology of his era: the written word. New classroom technologies seld

Making the Invisible Hand Visible: How Choice Architecture Operationalizes Economics

The Invisible Hand is an observation of our human nature. Adam Smith studied how people naturally operate within social settings. He then applied those behavioral insights to explain how societies generate lasting wealth. Long-term empirical trends support his core insights. Over the past two centuries, global economic data reveals unprecedented rises in real gross domestic product per capita alongside dramatic increases in global life expectancy. In 1776, Adam Smith publishe

The Science of Changing Your Mind: An Intuition-First Guide to Bayesian Thinking

Decision-makers navigate uncertainty, seeking conviction in an unpredictable world. This article explores a practical, intuition-first application of Bayesian Inference. Readers learn how a straightforward mental model, supported by a clear framework and an interactive calculator, sharpens decision confidence. While the text examines core mathematical relationships, the mechanics remain in service of practical intuition, equipping individuals to evaluate new evidence and adju

Redefining Rationality: The Act of Calibrating Internal Maps to the Evolving World

Many people view rationality as a cold, rigid set of rules. This narrow definition often creates resistance because it suggests a singular, correct way to live. However, this article introduces and defines Diverse Rationality to better align with how people actually experience decision-making. We move rationality from a static destination to an active process of internal calibration—one that is sensitive not only to the world but to the shifting state of the decision-maker th

The Architecture of Agency: How Evolution Uses Information to Override Physics

What if everything you've ever chosen—your job, your relationships, your values—was never really your choice? Neuroscientists and philosophers increasingly argue that free will is an illusion—your decisions pre-programmed by genetics, childhood, and context. Yet our lived experience insists otherwise. We feel we choose, and society expects us to act accordingly. So which is it? Do we truly have agency—or are we just playing out a script? This article suggests we are asking t

Seeking what not to seek: How to align achievement and happiness

Are you chasing success yet still feeling unfulfilled? The quest for achievement often collides with the elusive pursuit of happiness, leaving many to wonder if the two can truly coexist. As a naturally competitive person, I have felt this tension firsthand. Whether it was on the rugby pitch, climbing the corporate ladder, coaching my children, or striving to be a better entrepreneur and professor, competition has always been my baseline. I know I’m not alone. The drive to c
