Treasury Rates Update: October 22nd, 2026
In my decades monitoring fixed-income markets, a sudden single-day plunge of this magnitude signals an extraordinary liquidity event or market repricing. Despite the October 14th CPI report revealing an uptick in inflation from 3.4% to 3.7%, the Treasury market experienced a dramatic rally this past week. Yields fell substantially across every maturity, headlined by a remarkable 17 basis point (bp) drop in the 10-year yield on a single day—a move reminiscent of major flight-to-safety shocks like the Silicon Valley Bank collapse.
The benchmark 10-year Treasury rate dropped 14bp for the week to settle at 4.96%, extending its cumulative 14-day decline to 32bp.
Upcoming Key Economic Data Release:
Next jobs release is November 6
Next CPI release is November 10
The next Fed meeting is on October 28
Key Developments
Uniform Yield Decline: The 30-year yield fell 14bp to 5.29%, while the 5-year rate dropped 13bp to 4.78%.
Intermediate & Short-End Softening: The 2-year yield declined 12bp to 4.65%, while the 1-year rate fell 8bp to 4.41%.
Yield Curve Compression: As short and intermediate yields held up relatively better than long rates, the 10-to-2 year spread compressed slightly to 0.31%, down from 0.33% last week.
Front-End Tick Down: The 1-month yield dropped 6bp to finish at 4.11%.
Markets now turn toward the October 28th Federal Reserve meeting, followed by the November 6th jobs report and November 10th CPI release.
